Fresh and processed meats have the potential to cause cancer

Red and processed meats have the potential to cause cancer in humans, according to a report by a World Health Organization agency that is drawing ire from meat industry groups that argue the science is inadequate.

The determination, published by a panel of researchers for the International Agency for Research on Cancer in a medical journal Monday, classifies processed meat products like salami and bacon carcinogenic to humans, the strongest level of risk for cancer, and a category shared with tobacco smoke and diesel engine exhaust.

Fresh meats like steaks and roasts are considered probably cancer-causing, a level of risk shared with the widely used herbicide glyphosate.

The IARC, considered an authority in evaluating evidence on cancer causation cited studies that conclude there is strong evidence to support a link between eating too much meat and the onset of colorectal cancer, the third-most common type world-wide.

“The link to cancer is supported by increasingly compelling research,” wrote Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University who wasn’t involved in the IARC report, in an email. “There seem to be many reasons to eat less beef, climate change among them, but cancer is a more personal worry.”

The results by the 22-person panel, which consisted of scientists from 10 nations, already have drawn criticism from meat and food industry groups that have braced for such decisions for years, in part by funding research on the benefits of eating meat.

The meat industry has battled international and U.S. health authorities on the place of meat in a balanced diet for decades.

Sugary drinks in New Zealand hospitals scrapped

Thirsty people with a sweet tooth will be out of luck if they try to buy fizzy drinks in hospitals from today.

Hospitals and district health boards throughout the country will be banning the sale of sugary drinks from their premises, in an effort to curb obesity.

Director-General of Health Chai Chuah wrote to all district health boards last month as part of a push to get them to ban the beverages.

Thirteen DHBs already have bans in place and six others are expected to have implemented their new drinks policies by the end of September.

That leaves just one DHB, Waikato, which will fully implement its policy by January, a Ministry of Health spokesperson said.

University of Auckland researcher Dr Gerhard Sundborn, who also heads public health advocacy group FIZZ, says the Ministry of Health directive will send a strong message.

“Considering the harm that sugary drinks pose in their contribution to rotten teeth, diabetes and obesity this action will have strong population health benefits, particularly for our children,” says Dr Sundborn.

“It is hoped too that this model may be replicated in other sectors, for example education.”

A symposium looking at sugary drinks and health will be held by researchers at the University of Auckland, Otago University and Manukau Institute of Technology in October.

The total greed of Big Pharma is on parade this week as a company called Turing Pharmaceuticals took ownership of a lifesaving medication that treats parasitic infections like malaria. The pill — mostly purchased by AIDS and cancer patients — used to cost $1 each. But now, thanks to Turing Pharmaceuticals and its profiteering CEO Martin Shkreli, each pill will cost you $750.

Why is Turing Pharmaceuticals charging $750 a pill? Because they CAN. Like every other drug company in the world, they’re going to gouge the consumer and extract the maximum dollars possible. Big Pharma is really about the profits, you see, and not at all interested in “helping humanity” as their ridiculous TV ads claim.

This Daraprim pill, by the way, probably costs about 20 cents to manufacture, and it’s probably manufactured in India or Puerto Rico, where most drugs are made and then exported to the USA. How does Turing Pharmaceuticals justify $750 a pill? According to the pharma douchebag Martin Shkreli, it’s “a bargain for health insurers” at $750.

A bargain compared to what? A bargain compared to all the other monopoly-priced drugs, he says. And that’s how insane the monopoly has become, by the way: When a pill that sells for $750 is called “a bargain,” you know you’re living under a monopolistic profiteering medical cartel. And it is, truly, a protected cartel. Who’s protecting it? The corrupt government, of course… starting with the FDA.

In a world full of extraordinary knowledge and countless tiny fragments of detail; the whole concept is lost: most experts lack the overview of how everything is intricately connected. They therefore pose a serious risk to everyone who seeks help with their health.

Cancer is a disease that is caused by so many CAUSES that it’s a task on it’s own to determine which of them drive the disease and which ones prevent a recovery.

TREATING THE SYMPTOM instead of the DISEASE

Most cancer patients have limited financial resources and try to invest them as wisely as possible. To do so they often bypass the process of cause evaluation and tests and rather  jump directly to treatments to get rid of the obvious problem (CANCER).

This is usually supported by doctors who promote their treatments like warm bread. Mislead by all these sales opportunities and promising results patients follow general practice and “try” all sorts of anti cancer treatments/ remedies/ ointments and cures with tumour reduction being at the heart of each attempts. They spend valuable time and energy and massive amounts of money to rid themselves from the disease without ever looking at what caused the disease in the first place.

To visualise how ignorant this process is I always use the example of a fish tank.
